Max and Benny's in Northbrook: An unbelievable destination for everyone

Lester Schlan is the owner of Max and Benny's (http://www.maxandbennys.com/) and will have been in business for 25 years in December of 2010. Max and Benny's has been in the present location for 15 yrs and Lester has been in the restaurant business all of his life. He opened a coffee house and bakery right out of college. Lester Schlan, who is the owner of Max and Benny's in Northbrook, has built an unbelievable dining establishment that caters to all people from all different roads of life. The restuarant is not a Kosher establishment but offers Kosher ingredients but it's not for all of the dishes that are offered. Their Passover items such as their chocolate covered macaroons, matzo, brisket, chicken, a chocolate roulade with a raspberry sauce and other wonderful delights are like pulling up to the table at your grandmother's home during the holidays.

The deli is a one stop shopping for all of your needs at home for the refrigerator such as knishes, sandwiches, soups, cheesecakes, bagel dogs, kugels, mandel brot, rugalach, cheesecakes, deli meats and cheeses and their homemade cookies that can be customized. Presently, Max and Benny's is baking cookies for all of the different Chicago sports venues like the United Center, Wrigley Field, US Cellular field and the Chicago Black Hawks. Their mandel brot come in several different flavors including walnut and chocolate chip.

Any ingredient that is left over is always used for another dish or product. Nothing is wasted.

The platters that they offer are many and are listed on their catering menu that is the size of a dictionary and thesaurus.

Inspirations for menu come from his creativity and the ability to improve his operation. Lester has more than 100 people that work for him. They have lowered their prices in this economy for the customer.  They buy the very best food from the very best sources.  Max and Benny's  is a deli, restaurant and offers dinner, parties, events and catering options that are absolutely a delight to anyone's palette. Everything is baked from scratch: Rolls, bagels, challah, cookies bread, cheesecakes and all of their delights. Everthing is done impeccably and with pefection.  They cater to the business world, families, and get togethers such as bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, baptisms, first communions and birthday parties. No event is out of their ability to provide fresh quality food. They have a lot of different functions for people from all backgrounds and everyone is welcome. They are open for all people.
The parking  is ample and they offer free wifi. Do have a full liquor license and serve alcohol.

On the day of my visit, they were having a networking seminar for those looking for a job opportunity so they're able to really accomodate alot of different events and functions

Lester is able to stay ahead of the customer and in these economic conditions because they haven’t dropped their quality of products and delivery and they have a good reputation. Tourism is their bread and butter and they have a wonderful following from the surrounding community.

Corned beef is their biggest seller and they also offer chicken matzo ball soup that comes with either veges or some type of pasta like kreplach, rice or another other carb.

They have received stellar grades from the health department and they are very watchful of all insects and pests. There are eight managers  and they take care of everything. They watch the refrigerators because that  can be dangerous if the temperature is incorrect or the door is left open. Raw items are placed on the bottom because raw  food can’t drip on fresh food. Cleaning crews come in everynight and they spend a lot of money on cleaning to make sure that there are no health issues that arise.  Honestly, you can eat off the floors in the dining room and in the kitchen.

Their Passover menu consists of the following: fried matzo, with salami or lox, sponge cake french toast, matzo meal pancakes, passover cheese blintzes, matzo pizza with with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella either in a new or old style, 1/2 of a free-rage chicken with tsimmes and potato kugel or a passover popover filled with Tuna.

I sampled Matzo Ball Soup, a creamy chicken tortilla soup with pieces of tortilla chips, fresh baked rolls that are made every day, ruben egg rolls with 1000 island dressing, a corned beef sandwich with a pickle and coleslaw, chopped liver, passover popovers with tuna fish, homemade honey cake french toast, a chocolate roulade with strawberry sauce and FRESH whip cream,a chocolate covered macaroon and a chocolate chip cheesecake that was absolutely decadent. All of these items are listed on their menu and were wonderful. They were tasty, had a wonderfull texture and were made with perfection and care.

Max and Benny's is an absolute jewel and are top notch. They are an unbelieavable assett to the dining scene on the North Shore.

Seven Brothers Restaurant of Morton Grove: A family restaurant and community destination for all!!!

The Seven Brothers restaurant is the American dream of the Tsagalis brothers who emigrated from Tripoli Greece. They came to this country one by one and together have created a wonderful venture that has allowed them to take careof their families and provide a place for other famillies to get together and break bread.

The family steadly emigrated to America from Greece and ended up building
and assembling Morton Grove's premier family restaurant:  Seven Brothers Restaurant (http://www.thesevenbrothers.com/). Their rich history is full of working in the restaurant business and learning the industry from the bottom up. They are very very hard working and each brother manages and takes care of different parts of the operation. Every sibiling is visible at every angle. The restaurant supports 6 different families plus everyone and their families who are employed by the business. Over the years,  the family has had several other restaurants in other suburbs which they grew and ended up selling.  Seven Brothers Restaurant is open seven days a week from 5am to 11pm. They have a room for small parties, memorial serves and funerals and they also do a great take out business. Their menu comes from their previous work experience and from the feedback of the waitresses and customers. They truly take into consideration all of the feedback that is given to them.

Like every restaurant in this economy, they have managed to stay ahead of their competition by lowering their prices and making sure that they're providing quality service by wonderful employees, great food, and two or more of the brothers are always in the restaurant to monitor the operation. Their best advertising is done by word of mouth through their customers.

For Easter, they will be offering, lamb, duck, ribs and other wonderful specialties. They have a great assortment of sweets such as cheesecakes, pies, ice cream and other wonderful sweet creations.

I was able to sample and omelette that was complete with very fresh mushrooms, spinach and cheddar, a small stack of pancakes, hash browns that are freshly made every day and ham that came right off the bone. I also had the wonderful pleasure of trying a strawberry blintz along with a blueberry crepe and a cherry crepe. The blintz and crepes were prepared with absolute care and were devine. The batter of the crepe was delicate and fresh and the fruit sauces were sweet. They were truly the taste of summer. Also, there was a wonderful orange sauce that was included on the side that can be poured generously or very carefully depending on the customers preference. I was truly a treat to be a guest of the Seven Brothers restaurant.

The brothers are so connected with their customers that they carry the little grandkids of the customers to their tables. Betty is one very loyal customer that had the waitresses over for a BBQ which is wonderful indicator of how close the business is with their customers.  The relationship that the Seven Brothers Restuarant has with their customers is like one big happy family. They have a  loyal that includes customers from the south side as well as people who have been coming to their establishment for forty years. Seven Brothers Restaurant is a member of The Greek American Restaurant Association  (GARA).

Salerno's: Glenview's OUTSTANDING Italian eating destination. Salerno's is a standout for their recipes & authentic cooking.

I had the pleasure of being able to chat with Michael who is the Manager of  Glenview's Salerno's Pizza and sampled some of the most wonderful Italian food the Chicago and Glenview have to offer. The pizza, lasagna, fresh bread, Italian beef with wonderful krinkle cut french fries, a cannoli and pistachio gelato were all UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Salerno’s opened in 1966 and have five stores and are in the process  going to open another one in Vernon Hills.
The restaurant started as a bar in 1966 on16th in Berwyn and was started by Uncle Vince, Michael's  father, Uncle Arnie and Uncle Adam. As the restaurant was opened and functioning,  the customers were hungry and asked Michael's Mom to please make them something to eat. Michael's Mom and Aunt did the cooking and that's how Salerno's restaurant and menu were born.  The family came from Calabria and emigrated to the US in 1961.

The customer service is really outstanding  and the restaurant sits in 2000 sq feet. The business isdoing  very well and is experiencing an upswing.  They offer fresh pasta on Wednesday’s which  is half price and they offer half price Pizza on Monday's.
The quality of their food is ensured by trying  the food to make sure that the product tastes appropriate.  There’s a lot of training for the staff on products and how their supposed to be delivered.

They are staying ahead of your competition giving their customers  good food, good service and a smile.
Word of mouth is a great way to advertise their business which is their #1 marketing tool.

Salerno’s is immaculate and you can eat off the floors. The kitchen is also very clean and the staff is wonderful. There’s not a lot of turnover and the employees are treated like gold. They offer great specials and have lowered their prices in this economy.

They have a lot of ordering for catering from schools, graduations, families, birthday parties, house gatherings and also have  a lot of orders come in for salads, appetizers and pastas.
They are  working with a lot of credit cards and technology which has really helped in providing control of tracking their business. Salernos also offers online ordering for their take out needs. Every store does their own ordering which is an asset because it helps in fulfilling the needs of the neighborhood.  A lot of south siders from Oak Park and Cicero are the customers that keep coming back to the restaurant because of their past memories and experiences of the store in Berwyn.

They also offer stuffed shells, baked mostocoli and lots of pizza. They also offer wheat pasta which is available in only cut pasta and not for the lasagna. On the liter side they offer White fish, tilapia, salmon, cod fish (bakala) and also offer vegetarian specialties such as  egg plant parmagian, vegetarian focaccia and any pasta with marinara. sauce.  Shrimp scampi, shrimp diavolo, fried shrimp. Eating at Salerno's is like eating Sunday dinner on Taylor Street. A lot of prominent people come and frequent their business.

They make their own cannoli’s and tiramisu. They put Grand marnier in their tiramisu and all the dessert is made fresh upon request.

I sampled the following items which were all just incredible: cheese pizza which tasted like a slice form the old country, lasagna and fresh bread which were just unbelievable, the italian beef and krinkle cut french fries were great and the cannoli also most had me passed out on the spotless and clean floors. The cannolis need an award and category all of their own. I also got to sample the pistachio gelato which tasted like it just got off the plane from Italy!!! Salerno's food is just mind blowing!!!

The cannoli’s are an UNBELIEVABLE and they offer the mini version for parties (I'm not kidding here, these are THE BEST cannoli's you've EVER had). All orders go to salernospizza.com which goes to a straight to a fax machine and delivers the order to the location of the restaurant. There are plans in the future to knock out a wall and expand the restaurant to accommodate more of the sit down service. The restaurant offers food runners who bring the food to the customers after you place your order.

Salernos is a stand out and A++++ because of their wonderful customer service, unbelievable food that’s made with perfection and experience and fills the huge void in Glenview, IL.

Salerno’s deserves their own James Beard award for outstanding Italian food.
